backstage at ‘Junji Delfino: Here I Am - Live!’ on International Drag Day. Me and my ladies, theatre extraordinaire Jo Kukathas and jazzmamma Junji Delfino.
Shelah!!! appeared in the late 80’s when shoulder pads were becoming more of a hazard than a fashion must-have, a time with no rules, when gaudy colours were allowed to clash and music was unabashedly pop. She was the original IT girl of KL. A lover, a fierce dancefloor sweeper, a vision of youthful exuberance. Suddenly, she disappeared.
Cut to 2009. Malaysia wasn’t as pop as it was. People were paranoid and many were left in the dark as to who was what and how is that and what the f@#*! In a little festival called Sexualiti Merdeka, Shelah!!! reemerged bigger, bolder and yes, still a vision of youthful exuberance and hosted the festival’s closing concert, Rainbow Massacre. Her return was a towering success. When asked about her return she replied, “We need more love. Life IS fabulous and we need to be who we need to be. I’m back to present love to all the lovers.”
